CBD – Is It Safe?

Ok let’s face it CBD and hemp products are everywhere! In pharmacies, health-food stores and popping up just about everywhere online. But people are still unsure about this super supplement and whether it’s really safe to take. To avoid confusion let us again remind you of the difference between the two.

What is CBD?

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a phytocannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. It is not a psychoactive component and does not cause the “high” that comes from THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). It is THC (and not CBD) that is the psychoactive component of cannabis. CBD producers are only legally allowed grow hemp plants that contain 0.02% THC. (Safe from highs!)

The cannabidiol-rich flowers, leaves and stalks are used to produce CBD oil. And the flowers dried and cured for smoking. It comes in the form of oils, tinctures (liquids), edibles and dried buds (flowers) (personal favourite!). There has been much research on its health benefits in recent years as a treatment for childhood epilepsy, anxiety, depression, insomnia, acne, pain and inflammation. (More on this below).

Hemp Seed

Hemp seed (and hemp seed-oil) comes from the seeds of the plant and, while they do not contain cannabinoids, they are rich in fatty acids and compounds suitable in food production (for both humans and animals) and as a health supplement.

Hemp seed is nutritionally rich in essential unsaturated fatty acids, such as – omega-6-linoleic acid, omega-6-gamma-linoleic acid and omega-3-linoleic acid, and contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, C, D and E. It comes in such forms as cold-pressed hemp seed oil, hemp seed milk and milled hemp seed which is sprinkled over food or added to soups and shakes, etc. It is especially suitable for those with food allergies or sensitive guts who may find it hard to get the vital nutrients they need. (Superfood!)

Yes CBD is Safe!

But those with a keen interest and a bit of aptitude should do their own research because we are not allowed to “legally” say CBD “cures” anything! And if, like me, you’re a bloodhound who’s picked up a scent when it comes to research, you’ll be blown away by the findings!  There are articles, journals, PDFs and reports from science and medical bodies out there just waiting for you to feast your sleuthing eyes upon. Now go be a CBD-GEEK!

Interesting

WHO Report 13 Sept 2018

“The ECDD (Expert Committee on Drug Dependence) recommended that preparations considered to be pure cannabidiol (CBD) not be placed under international drug control as the substance was not found to have psychoactive properties, and presents no potential for abuse or dependence.” (QED – Safe!)
